Looking at the Text

The book that Im looking at is 'Defining Females, The Nature of Women in Society'.  I found this book in the library and it has all sorts of underlined phrases and sentences, green post it on pages and X's marked on some pages.

There are 5 Post it notes with headings on it -

- Comparing a woman to a child on vulnerability
- Space and Danger
- How a woman can impress people and where she should spend her time
- Important assets of a woman and about how she uses her time and physical nature
- Females grow up faster and mature faster than males - female brain test on what their good at

Trying to figure out a correlation with that... why has the previous reader marked this pages with these post its? These post its defnitely serve as some sort of guide or mark for the reader to keep coming back to.

Then there were post it notes on yellow paper and marks with a green pen... seems like there was more than one previous reader with an opinion for this book. Since Feminism is quite a controversial subject these remarks seemed much more interesting to me.......

Having such strong and crude phrases on these post it notes makes me question the credibility of the book. Judging by the remarks, it seems that it is a female that has read this book and written her reactions to some of the text. I would argee too that the written text is very backward and old school and very sexist and stereotypical to some extent.

Phrases that were found:
- SEXIST
- STEREOTPYCAL
- DEGRADING
- NONSENSE
- FALSE
- OUTDATED BELIEFS

Ironically most underlined phrases, post its and marks were all in Chapter 3: The Transformation of the Female Sexuality

These are some of the Phrases that were underlined.... what is the meaning to previous reader of these phrases?

A man's sexual needs are incontestable;

all sexuality should only be expressed heterosexually.

Childless couples have failed to achieve their full status in society and are generally pitied.

I found another page with just phrases of a sentence underline as oppose to the whole phrase... i've just typed it how it would look erasing the words that weren't underlined.

A woman's destiny                                  is to bear children. Pregnancy is          seen
                                       as a reason for pride.

I've decided to experiment with the concept of layering, repetition and colour to emphasize what seemed to have shocked the previous reader most that caused them to underline it and respond to it.

Experimentation

After all this experimentation, I found that I wasn't that interested in the book and the text that were highlighted and underlined. Thus I started looking at the play 'A View from the Bridge by Arthur Miller', that I studied 6 years ago in high school. Finding all these random phrases highlighted, hoping to decode what i was thinking at that time or maybe collage the highlighted phrases.

More Research...

Bike and Body by Nicollette Ross - a well - made and interesting accordion-fold book. The text is a complement to the concept, with blanks where the word 'bike' or others supplied by the imagination could be inserted. The physical form of the book works with the idea, even to the center of this joining of paper in accordion folds, the quality of the paper and its colour, the workmanship of the binding - we see it first as a beautiful box and then a story.

Sleep Walking Through the Trees - Christine Tacq  - LOVE THIS CONCEPT.. its so beautiful, interesting and smart.
